Trilliant Cut Ruby
Straight-sided and three-cornered, the trilliant most often works as a pair of side stones. Our model carries 70 facets over a 39.0° pavilion, 58.9% deep.
In ruby it returns 86 for brilliance: more than the trilliant in diamond, and second only to the cushion among our non-round ruby pages. Its cons are the three-fold plan, which our symmetry score reads as uneven, and the usual corundum costs against diamond.
Red trilliants either side of a white centre stone are a long-standing three-stone layout. For that job, the pair matters more than either stone's score.
Trilliant ruby: worth choosing? Pros and cons
Pros
None by our margins, though its light is close to a modern round's.
Compared with the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby and with the Trilliant Cut in diamond.
A difference counts from 3 points (Brilliance, Fire, Tilt, Leakage), 5 (Scintillation,
Symmetry), 2 (Spread) or 5% (weight); Tilt counts as a pro only for a stone within
5 points of the brilliance it is compared with. How we measure.
All eight scores against the T73
At a glance: the Trilliant Cut in ruby (white) against the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby (dashed): solid white where
it reaches further, hatched where it falls short. Each pro and con is explained, with pictures, below.
Against the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby: ahead on 2, level on 1, behind on 5.
Global74, the comparison 79, difference −5
Brilliance86, the comparison 94, difference −8

No score clears both tests. Fire is 52 against 37 for the T73 in ruby, but our rule counts each score once, where the gap is larger, and against the diamond trilliant (83) it is a con. Brilliance, 86, beats the diamond version's 78 but trails the T73's 94. What it offers is a bright, graphic accent shape.
Where the trilliant falls short in ruby
A three-fold pavilion
Symmetry 62 against 100 for the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby: 38 points lower
Symmetry, as we score it, asks how evenly the pavilion facets repeat as you go round the stone. A triangle repeats three times where a round repeats eight, so it scores 62. Geometry decides it, not the cutter's skill.
Trilliant Cut · 70 facets · Symmetry 62
T73 Round Brilliant · 73 facets · Symmetry 100
Symmetry scores how regular the pavilion facets are within the design. Compare how evenly the facets repeat around each pavilion. Drawn from each cut's own model.
What helps: None in a triangle. For a regular pavilion with similar light, the Cushion Cut Ruby scores 97 for symmetry.
Fire 52 against 83 for the Trilliant Cut in diamond: 31 points lower
Fire 52 against 83. In ruby it is still well above any round, but corundum's low dispersion keeps it far below diamond.

Look at the coloured flashes: those are fire. Same light, same size, same face-up angle; rendered by our 3D Gemstone Simulator from each cut's own model.
Tilt 75 against 89 for the Trilliant Cut in diamond: 14 points lower
Tilted 20°, it keeps 75 of its face-up light in ruby, 89 in diamond. That is level with the T73 in ruby, so this con is about the material rather than the triangle.

Tilt is how much of its own face-up light a stone keeps when tilted. Each frame is the Light Return map with the stone tilted away from you by the angle shown; grey is light leaving through the pavilion. The share under each frame is that picture's own.
What helps: Among the three-sided cuts, the Trillion Cut Ruby keeps 87 when tipped, though with less light (72).
The trilliant suits a ruby used as a side stone, or a bold solitaire where a graphic outline matters more than symmetry. For a fancy shape in ruby it is bright: only the cushion returns more light among our non-round ruby pages.
For curved sides, more fire and more spread, the Trillion Cut Ruby; for the most light in ruby, DG-M5 Ruby. Protect the three points in a setting.
Trilliant Cut Ruby: questions
Is a trilliant a good cut for ruby?
A reasonable one: Brilliance 86, against 94 for the T73 in ruby, with 12% leakage.
Trilliant or trillion for a ruby?
The trilliant returns more light (86 against 72) and leaks less; the trillion has more fire (59 against 52) and faces up larger for its weight.
Why does a trilliant score low on symmetry?
Its pavilion repeats three times around the stone, not eight: Symmetry 62 against 100 for a round.
What does a 6.5 mm trilliant ruby weigh?
A red trilliant 6.5 mm across is about 1.09 ct; a white diamond one, 0.96 ct.
