DG-Octagonal Kite Ruby
Eight crown kites frame a large octagonal table above eight girdle triangles, and long kites below close the pavilion to a point. In our model that comes to 41 facets over a 70.0% depth, with a 55.0% table, a 32.0° crown and a 43.0° pavilion.
Its pavilion kites were set for emerald, clear of that stone's critical angle. In ruby they are clear too, at 43.0° against ruby's 34.6°, and above the 36.4° guide minimum, yet 26% of the light still leaks; our census measures the loss, not its path.
In diamond it returns 88 and leaks 7%; the ruby keeps less.
DG-Octagonal Kite in ruby: pros and cons
Pros
None by our margins. Tilt is 95, on less light than the T73.
Compared with the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby and with the DG-Octagonal Kite in diamond.
A difference counts from 3 points (Brilliance, Fire, Tilt, Leakage), 5 (Scintillation,
Symmetry), 4% (face-up size per carat) or 5% (weight); Tilt counts as a pro only for a stone within
5 points of the brilliance it is compared with. How we measure.
All eight scores against the T73
At a glance: the DG-Octagonal Kite in ruby (white) against the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby (dashed): solid white where
it reaches further, hatched where it falls short. Each pro and con is explained, with pictures, below.
Against the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby: ahead on 1, level on 1, behind on 6.

Tilt95, the comparison 75, difference +20
Face-up light census, a different measure from the Cut Grading Tool; Spread and Shape-norm above 100 sit on the ring. Spread is the census's estimate from depth alone; the face-up size in the pros and cons is measured from each model's outline.
Only Tilt beats a baseline here, and it beats both: 95, against 75 for the T73 and 89 for the diamond version. Our rules still leave it out, since tilt is a pro only for a stone within five points of the brilliance it is set against, and the ruby's 74 is well short of both 94 and 88. Symmetry is level at 100. Its offer is an even, eight-fold face on a large table, for a bold centre stone.
DG-Octagonal Kite's costs in ruby
Well under half the diamond version's fire
Fire 34 against 82 for the DG-Octagonal Kite in diamond: 48 points lower
Corundum disperses light at 0.018, diamond at 0.044, and the large table and long kites give few small facets to break light up. The ruby also trails the T73 in ruby, 34 to 37.

Look at the coloured flashes: those are fire. Same light, same size, same face-up angle; rendered by our 3D Gemstone Simulator from each cut's own model.
Leakage 26 against 5 for the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby: 21 points higher
26% in our census, against 5% for the T73 and 7% for the design in diamond.

Each frame is the Light Return map with the stone tilted away from you by the angle shown; grey is light leaving through the pavilion. The share under each frame is that picture's own.
What helps: We have not measured a steeper DG-Octagonal Kite; its 43.0° pavilion already clears the guide minimum. DG-M5 Ruby lets out 0%; the plain Octagon Cut Ruby 20%.
Brilliance 74 against 94 for the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby: 20 points lower
The 43.0° pavilion kites clear ruby's critical angle, so the loss is not light falling straight through. Against its own diamond version the gap is smaller, 74 to 88.
DG-Octagonal Kite in ruby · Brilliance 74
T73 Round Brilliant in ruby · Brilliance 94
Red, green and blue = light returning to the eye; grey = light leaving through the pavilion. This is the head-on view; the Brilliance score averages a wider cone of light, so the score can differ from what one picture shows.
What helps: For an octagonal outline with a little more light, the Octagon Cut Ruby returns 78; for the most, DG-M5 Ruby, 100.
Scintillation follows the number of facets: more facets, more and smaller flashes as the stone moves. Count the facets in each crown. Drawn from each cut's own model.
In ruby, DG-Octagonal Kite suits a bold, symmetrical centre stone where steady light matters more than fire. It does better in diamond: 88 for brilliance and 82 for fire.
For more light in ruby, DG-M5 Ruby; for an octagon with a little more light and less leakage, the Octagon Cut Ruby.
