DG-Elongated Hexagon Ruby
Both faces of DG-Elongated Hexagon are cut alike, two steps each side of a six-facet girdle, with the table in front matched by an equal flat behind. It was drawn for emerald and finished on both faces, so it reads the same from either side. The model has 32 facets and a 50.0% table, with crown and back both cut at 36.0°, and it is only 45.3% deep.
Its back flat is a window by design: the cut page leaves it out of its head-on figures, but the census counts the light through it as lost, which pulls the brilliance here down and the leakage up.
Even so, in ruby it is second only to the oval for fire.
Is DG-Elongated Hexagon good in ruby? Pros and cons
Compared with the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby and with the DG-Elongated Hexagon in diamond.
A difference counts from 3 points (Brilliance, Fire, Tilt, Leakage), 5 (Scintillation,
Symmetry), 4% (face-up size per carat) or 5% (weight); Tilt counts as a pro only for a stone within
5 points of the brilliance it is compared with. How we measure.
All eight scores against the T73

it reaches further, hatched where it falls short. Each pro and con is explained, with pictures, below.

Face-up light census, a different measure from the Cut Grading Tool; Spread and Shape-norm above 100 sit on the ring. Spread is the census's estimate from depth alone; the face-up size in the pros and cons is measured from each model's outline.
Fire 72 against 37 for the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby: 35 points higher
Few, broad steps and a table on both faces give light long, simple paths, and the census finds a large share of what comes back split into colour. In diamond the same design scores 97.

Face-up size 107 against 100 for the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby (T73 = 100): 7% more face-up area for the same weight
Measured from the outline, a carat of this shallow, 45.3% deep design covers slightly more area than a carat of T73.
DG-Elongated Hexagon · 8.71 x 5.12 mm at 1.00 ct · Face-up size 107
T73 Round Brilliant · 6.21 mm at 1.00 ct · Face-up size 100
Both stones weigh 1.00 ct in ruby and are drawn to the same scale in millimetres, from each cut's own model. Face-up size is the outline's area per carat, with the T73 at 100: a deeper stone, or a rounder outline, spreads less area for its weight.
Brilliance 27 against 94 for the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby: 67 points lower
The census counts light through the back flat as lost, so part of the shortfall is the window doing what it was drawn to do. The steps also lie at 36.0°, just above ruby's 34.6° critical angle and below the 36.4° guide minimum for round designs.

T73 Round Brilliant in ruby · Brilliance 94
Red, green and blue = light returning to the eye; grey = light leaving through the pavilion. This is the head-on view; the Brilliance score averages a wider cone of light, so the score can differ from what one picture shows.
What helps: The window is part of the design, and we have not measured it at other angles. For an elongated ruby with more light, the Oval Cut Ruby returns 66; for the most, DG-M5 Ruby returns 100.
Leakage 64 against 5 for the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby: 59 points higher
64% leaves through the back in our census, the window included; the T73 loses 5%. Only the radiant leaks more in ruby.

Each frame is the Light Return map with the stone tilted away from you by the angle shown; grey is light leaving through the pavilion. The share under each frame is that picture's own.
What helps: A closed back would be a different stone, and every size leaks the same share. DG-M5 Ruby lets out 0%.
Loses light as it tips, where the diamond does not
Tilt 56 against 100 for the DG-Elongated Hexagon in diamond: 44 points lower
Tipped by 20°, the ruby keeps 56% of its face-up light; the same design in diamond keeps 100%. The diamond starts from less, 12 for brilliance, but holds all of it.

Tilt is how much of its own face-up light a stone keeps when tilted. Each frame is the Light Return map with the stone tilted away from you by the angle shown; grey is light leaving through the pavilion. The share under each frame is that picture's own.
What helps: Of the ruby cuts that keep close to the T73's light, DG-Rafaello Ruby holds 81 when tipped.
Scintillation follows the number of facets: more facets, more and smaller flashes as the stone moves. Count the facets in each crown. Drawn from each cut's own model.
Choose DG-Elongated Hexagon in ruby for a pendant or open setting where both faces show and colour matters more than light. In ruby it shows strong fire, 72, but loses most of its light.
The back flat is left open by design, as a window, and the census books every ray through it as lost. With that counted, 64% leaks in ruby, against 5% for the T73.
Can DG-Elongated Hexagon be seen from both sides?
Yes. Front and back are cut to match, the table answered by a flat of equal size, which is why we draw it for pendants and open settings.
Is DG-Elongated Hexagon good for ruby?
For fire, yes: 72, second only to the oval among the ruby cuts we measure. For light, no: Brilliance 27.
