DG-Elongated Hexagon Sapphire: the second-highest fire we measure in this stone

Brilliance 27 · Fire 72 · Scintillation 51 · in our census, where the T73 scores 94 · 37 · 80 in sapphire

Step cut the same on both faces, with a window behind the table by design: in sapphire it shows strong fire and loses much of its light.

DG-Elongated Hexagon Sapphire

DG-Elongated Hexagon is a long hexagon with square points, step cut alike on front and back: two steps either side of a six-facet girdle, a table in front and a flat of the same size behind. It was drawn for emerald, and reads the same from either side, for pendants and open settings. Our model is 1.7 to 1 and 45.3% deep, with 32 facets, a 36.0° crown and a 36.0° pavilion.

One census note matters here. The back flat is a window by design, and the cut's own page leaves it out of the head-on figures. Our census counts the light through it as lost, so the light and leakage figures on this page include the window.

Against the T73 it gains fire and face-up size. It loses light and sparkle, and, against the same design in diamond, its hold on light when tipped.

Is DG-Elongated Hexagon a good cut for sapphire? Pros and cons

Compared with the T73 Round Brilliant in sapphire and with the DG-Elongated Hexagon in diamond. A difference counts from 3 points (Brilliance, Fire, Tilt, Leakage), 5 (Scintillation, Symmetry), 4% (face-up size per carat) or 5% (weight); Tilt counts as a pro only for a stone within 5 points of the brilliance it is compared with. How we measure.

What a sapphire gains as DG-Elongated Hexagon

Nearly twice the T73's fire

Fire 72 against 37 for the T73 Round Brilliant in sapphire: 35 points higher

Fire 72 against 37, second in our sapphire census only to the oval. It is colour in a stone that returns little light, 27, and the diamond version shows more still, 97.

Faces up larger for its weight

Face-up size 107 against 100 for the T73 Round Brilliant in sapphire (T73 = 100): 7% more face-up area for the same weight

Measured from each model's outline, a carat of it spreads over more face than the T73.

DG-Elongated Hexagon · 8.71 x 5.12 mm at 1.00 ct · Face-up size 107

T73 Round Brilliant · 6.21 mm at 1.00 ct · Face-up size 100

Both stones weigh 1.00 ct in sapphire and are drawn to the same scale in millimetres, from each cut's own model. Face-up size is the outline's area per carat, with the T73 at 100: a deeper stone, or a rounder outline, spreads less area for its weight.

Where DG-Elongated Hexagon costs a sapphire

Under a third of the T73's light

Brilliance 27 against 94 for the T73 Round Brilliant in sapphire: 67 points lower

Brilliance 27 against 94, with the window counted as lost. The same design in diamond returns even less, 12.

T73 round brilliant in sapphire face-up Light Return map: red, green and blue show where the light returns from, grey shows where it leaks (Brilliance 94)

T73 Round Brilliant in sapphire · Brilliance 94

Red, green and blue = light returning to the eye; grey = light leaving through the pavilion. This is the head-on view; the Brilliance score averages a wider cone of light, so the score can differ from what one picture shows.

What helps: The open back is the design; we have measured no closed version. For a long step cut that keeps more light in sapphire, the Emerald Cut Sapphire returns 65.

Nearly two-thirds of the light leaks

Leakage 64 against 5 for the T73 Round Brilliant in sapphire: 59 points higher

64% of the light in our census goes out of the back, against 5% for the T73. That figure includes the window behind the table, which the design leaves open on purpose; our census does not report how much of the leak passes through it.

Holds less light at a tilt than in diamond

Tilt 56 against 100 for the DG-Elongated Hexagon in diamond: 44 points lower

Tilted 20°, the sapphire keeps 56 of its face-up light, the diamond version 100. The diamond starts from very little light, Brilliance 12, so its full score is a share of a small amount.

What helps: Among sapphire cuts with near-round light, DG-Anteros Sapphire keeps 78 when tipped.

Fewer flashes than a round

Scintillation 51 against 80 for the T73 Round Brilliant in sapphire: 29 points lower

Scintillation 51 against 80. A step cut of 32 facets, it has broad, flat steps where the T73 has 73 brilliant facets.

T73 Round Brilliant · 73 facets · Scintillation 80

Scintillation follows the number of facets: more facets, more and smaller flashes as the stone moves. Count the facets in each crown. Drawn from each cut's own model.

What helps: As a long step cut, the Emerald Cut Sapphire scores 72 for scintillation.

Who a DG-Elongated Hexagon sapphire suits

DG-Elongated Hexagon suits a pendant or open setting where both faces are seen and the window is part of the look. In sapphire it brings strong fire for the stone and a large face for its weight.

If the stone should look bright face-up, choose something else: the Emerald Cut Sapphire for a long step cut, or DG-M5 Sapphire for the most light.

DG-Elongated Hexagon Sapphire: questions

Why does DG-Elongated Hexagon leak so much light?

One reason is the design: its back flat is a window, and our census counts the light through it as lost. In all 64% leaves through the back, against 5% for the T73; the census does not say how much of that goes through the window.

Does a DG-Elongated Hexagon sapphire have fire?

Yes, for sapphire: Fire 72, nearly twice the T73's 37. The same design in diamond reaches 97.

What does a 6.5 mm wide DG-Elongated Hexagon sapphire weigh?

It comes to 2.05 ct at that width, against 1.80 ct in diamond.
