DG-Anteros Moissanite: cut for moissanite, brighter than the T73

Brilliance 92 · Fire 91 · Scintillation 80 · in our census, where the T73 scores 86 · 97 · 80 in moissanite

Most moissanite is cut to diamond angles. DG-Anteros is cut for moissanite: more light back, less leaking out.

DG-Anteros Moissanite

DG-Anteros keeps the T73's 73 facets and 53% table and re-solves the crown and pavilion for moissanite's refractive index of about 2.65. Its crown is 33.0° and its pavilion 40.1°.

Measured in the stone it was drawn for, it returns more light than the T73 and leaks less. Its one cost is how it holds that light when tilted.

Is DG-Anteros the right cut for moissanite? Pros and cons

Compared with the T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite and with the DG-Anteros in diamond. A difference counts from 3 points (Brilliance, Fire, Tilt, Leakage), 5 (Scintillation, Symmetry), 2 (Spread) or 5% (weight); Tilt counts as a pro only for a stone within 5 points of the brilliance it is compared with. What DG-Anteros does for moissanite

Far more fire than in diamond

Fire 91 against 74 for the DG-Anteros in diamond: 17 points higher

Like every cut on these pages, it shows far more fire in moissanite than in diamond. That is the stone; the next two points are the design.

Lighter for its size

0.89 ct at 6.5 mm, against 0.97 ct for the same cut in diamond (−9%)

Moissanite is less dense than diamond, so a DG-Anteros of a given size carries less weight than the same cut in diamond.

More light than the T73 in moissanite

Brilliance 92 against 86 for the T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite: 6 points higher

This is what the design is for. The T73's angles suit diamond; in moissanite they send part of the light past the eye. Re-solved angles bring it back: the face-up map is almost all colour.

T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite · Brilliance 86

Red, green and blue = light returning to the eye; grey = light leaving through the pavilion. This is the head-on view; the Brilliance score averages a wider cone of light, so the score can differ from what one picture shows.

Less light lost through the back

Leakage 3 against 7 for the T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite: 4 points lower

3% of the light in our census leaks, against 7% for the T73 in moissanite. Face-up and at 10° the strip shows less grey than the T73's; by 30° the T73 holds better, which is the con below.

The one catch

Keeps less of its light when tilted

Tilt 86 against 94 for the T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite: 8 points lower

Tipped by 20° it keeps 86 of its face-up light, against 94 for the T73. The strip shows grey arriving from 20° on.

Tilt is how much of its own face-up light a stone keeps when tilted. Each frame is the Light Return map with the stone tilted away from you by the angle shown; grey is light leaving through the pavilion. The share under each frame is that picture's own.

What helps: Its advantage is face-up, where a ring is mostly seen. If a stone will hang and tilt, the T73 Round Brilliant keeps more when tipped, at 86 brilliance against 92.

Who DG-Anteros suits

For a round moissanite, this is the cut we designed for it: the most light and the least leakage of the cuts on our moissanite pages, with moissanite's fire intact at 91.

If the stone will be seen tilted most of the time, the T73 Round Brilliant holds more light at an angle. For an antique look, the Old European Cut Moissanite. In diamond, choose the T73 instead: DG-Anteros is matched to moissanite, not better in general.

DG-Anteros Moissanite: questions

Why cut moissanite differently from diamond?

Moissanite bends light more strongly than diamond, so diamond angles send part of its light the wrong way. In our census the T73 returns 86 in moissanite; DG-Anteros returns 92.

Does DG-Anteros have less fire than a T73 in moissanite?

A little: Fire 91 against 97. We list fire as a pro here because against the same cut in diamond the gap is larger and goes the other way, 91 against 74; each score counts once, where the difference is bigger.

Can I cut DG-Anteros on a standard faceting machine?

Yes: the same 73-facet plan on a 96 index gear as the T73. Only the angles change.

Is DG-Anteros good in diamond too?

It is matched to moissanite. In diamond the T73 is the better choice; see the DG-Anteros page for both stones side by side.
