Baguette Cut Moissanite: more face for its weight than a round, and lighter than diamond
Brilliance 32 · Fire 75 · Scintillation 43 · in our census, where the T73 scores 86 · 97 · 80 in moissanite
A slim step cut with only 21 facets: in moissanite it weighs less than a diamond baguette and shows a little more face for its weight than a round, while returning far less light.
Rendered in our 3D Gemstone Simulator from the Baguette Cut model, 1.00 ct, studio light.
Baguette Cut Moissanite
Ours stretches 1.974 widths long and carries just 21 step facets over a 32.37° pavilion, 66.8% deep. Jewelers set baguettes beside a bigger centre stone, or end to end along a channel-set band.
Its two pros are about size and weight; its four cons are about light and pattern. On symmetry it is the lowest cut we measure, and on leakage only DG-Elongated Hexagon loses more in moissanite.
Even fire, where moissanite usually shines, is low here: 75, the lowest of any cut we measure in moissanite, though still above the diamond baguette's 62.
Is a baguette cut good for moissanite? Pros and cons
Compared with the T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite and with the Baguette Cut in diamond.
A difference counts from 3 points (Brilliance, Fire, Tilt, Leakage), 5 (Scintillation,
Symmetry), 4% (face-up size per carat) or 5% (weight); Tilt counts as a pro only for a stone within
5 points of the brilliance it is compared with. How we measure.

Face-up light census, a different measure from the Cut Grading Tool; Spread and Shape-norm above 100 sit on the ring. Spread is the census's estimate from depth alone; the face-up size in the pros and cons is measured from each model's outline.
3.33 ct at 6.5 mm, against 3.64 ct for the same cut in diamond (−9%)
A baguette 6.5 mm wide is a long stone, and a heavy one for its width. Moissanite's specific gravity of 3.22, against diamond's 3.52, trims the carat figure for the same millimetres.
A Baguette Cut 6.5 mm across, weighed from the model's measured volume and each stone's specific gravity.
Face-up size 108 against 100 for the T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite (T73 = 100): 8% more face-up area for the same weight
Face-up size compares a model's outline area with its weight, with the T73 at 100. Weight for weight, the baguette's outline covers 108 to the round's 100: a modest gain for a stone 66.8% deep.
Baguette Cut · 8.61 x 4.36 mm at 1.00 ct · Face-up size 108
T73 Round Brilliant · 6.68 mm at 1.00 ct · Face-up size 100
Both stones weigh 1.00 ct in moissanite and are drawn to the same scale in millimetres, from each cut's own model. Face-up size is the outline's area per carat, with the T73 at 100: a deeper stone, or a rounder outline, spreads less area for its weight.
Symmetry 39 against 100 for the T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite: 61 points lower
Symmetry scores how evenly a design's pavilion facets repeat. The baguette's 39 is the lowest of all the cuts we measure, while the Rectangle, a step cut with square corners, scores 100.
Baguette Cut · 21 facets · Symmetry 39
T73 Round Brilliant · 73 facets · Symmetry 100
Symmetry scores how regular the pavilion facets are within the design. Compare how evenly the facets repeat around each pavilion. Drawn from each cut's own model.
What helps: For a step-cut rectangle with a fully regular pavilion, the Rectangle scores 100.
Brilliance 32 against 86 for the T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite: 54 points lower
Brilliance 32: only DG-Bowtie and DG-Elongated Hexagon return less in moissanite. Its 32.37° pavilion sits well under the 39.5° guide minimum, but that guide is drawn for round designs, and we have not measured a steeper baguette.

T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite · Brilliance 86
Red, green and blue = light returning to the eye; grey = light leaving through the pavilion. This is the head-on view; the Brilliance score averages a wider cone of light, so the score can differ from what one picture shows.
What helps: No long step cut we measure gets near a round: the Emerald Cut returns 51. For the most light in moissanite, DG-M5 Moissanite at 98.
Scintillation 43 against 80 for the T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite: 37 points lower
Our scintillation score is read from the facet pattern, so a baguette earns the same figure in any gemstone. With 21 facets it gives little of it; among the cuts we measure, only the Triangle scores lower.
Scintillation follows the number of facets: more facets, more and smaller flashes as the stone moves. Count the facets in each crown. Drawn from each cut's own model.
What helps: 21 facets cannot flash like 73, whatever the angles. The Emerald Cut keeps a long stepped look with 72 for scintillation.
Leakage 42 against 7 for the T73 Round Brilliant in moissanite: 35 points higher
42% of the light in our census leaves through the back, many times the T73's 7%. The diamond baguette loses 38%, so moissanite does not rescue it.

Each frame is the Light Return map with the stone tilted away from you by the angle shown; grey is light leaving through the pavilion. The share under each frame is that picture's own.
The baguette suits side stones and channel-set bands, where straight lines and a small size matter more than the light a stone returns. There moissanite gives it less weight than diamond and a little more face for its carats.
As a centre stone it is a weak pairing, with little light and few flashes. For a long step-cut outline with more of both, the Emerald Cut; for a bright centre stone, a round such as DG-Anteros Moissanite.
Moissanite is doubly refractive, and a baguette's long steps are where doubled facet edges would show. We trace one refractive index, so we cannot say how much.
Baguette Cut Moissanite: questions
Is baguette cut moissanite sparkly?
Not much. Scintillation is 43 against 80 for the T73 Round Brilliant, and Brilliance 32 against 86: it is a cut of clean lines rather than glitter.
How much does a 6.5 mm wide baguette moissanite weigh?
3.33 ct in moissanite and 3.64 ct in diamond. Our model is 1.974 times as long as it is wide, so that is a long stone.
Baguette or emerald cut moissanite?
The emerald cut returns more light (51 against 32), shows more fire (95 against 75) and leaks less (27% against 42%).
Do moissanite baguettes leak light?
This one does: 42% in our census, where the T73 Round Brilliant loses 7% and a diamond baguette 38%.
