DG-Anteros Emerald: lighter in weight than diamond, and second only to DG-M5 for light here

Brilliance 86 · Fire 52 · Scintillation 80 · in our census, where the T73 scores 78 · 39 · 80 in emerald

Re-solved for moissanite, DG-Anteros still suits emerald better than the T73 does. Its listed cons come from the diamond version, which does better again.

DG-Anteros Emerald

DG-Anteros keeps the T73's 73-facet plan and its 53% table, and changes the crown and pavilion: here a 33.0° crown over a 40.1° pavilion, 59.4% deep. Those angles were chosen for moissanite, a stone that bends light far more strongly than emerald.

In emerald it still beats the T73: Brilliance 86 against 78, leakage 14% against 22%. Our rules count each score once, against whichever baseline shows the larger gap, and for this cut that is the same DG-Anteros in diamond. So the gains over the T73 appear here, in the intro, while the list below shows what emerald costs.

Is DG-Anteros a good cut for emerald? Pros and cons

Compared with the T73 Round Brilliant in emerald and with the DG-Anteros in diamond. A difference counts from 3 points (Brilliance, Fire, Tilt, Leakage), 5 (Scintillation, Symmetry), 2 (Spread) or 5% (weight); Tilt counts as a pro only for a stone within 5 points of the brilliance it is compared with. What emerald gains in DG-Anteros

Lighter than the same cut in diamond

0.75 ct at 6.5 mm, against 0.97 ct for the same cut in diamond (−23%)

Emerald's specific gravity is 2.72, diamond's 3.52, so a DG-Anteros of any given width weighs nearly a quarter less in emerald: 0.75 ct at 6.5 mm.

Much less fire than in diamond

Fire 52 against 74 for the DG-Anteros in diamond: 22 points lower

Emerald's dispersion of 0.014 is under a third of diamond's, so most of the colour DG-Anteros throws in diamond is missing here. Against the T73 in emerald it actually scores higher, 52 against 39: the larger gap, with diamond, is the one we list.

Holds less light when tilted than in diamond

Tilt 69 against 85 for the DG-Anteros in diamond: 16 points lower

Tipped 20°, it keeps 69 of its face-up light, where the diamond version keeps 85 and the T73 in emerald 77. A 40.1° pavilion sits under a degree above emerald's 39.4° guide minimum, which leaves little room once light comes in at a slant.

Tilt is how much of its own face-up light a stone keeps when tilted. Each frame is the Light Return map with the stone tilted away from you by the angle shown; grey is light leaving through the pavilion. The share under each frame is that picture's own.

What helps: The T73 Round Brilliant Emerald keeps 77 when tipped, at 78 brilliance: a steadier, slightly dimmer stone.

More leakage than in diamond

Leakage 14 against 2 for the DG-Anteros in diamond: 12 points higher

14% of the light in our census escapes through the pavilion. In diamond, with a critical angle of 24.4° rather than 39.4°, the same facets let out only 2%.

A little less light than the diamond version

Brilliance 86 against 95 for the DG-Anteros in diamond: 9 points lower

Brilliance 86 against 95 for DG-Anteros in diamond, yet clearly ahead of the T73 in emerald. Of every cut we measure in emerald, only DG-M5 returns more.

Red, green and blue = light returning to the eye; grey = light leaving through the pavilion. This is the head-on view; the Brilliance score averages a wider cone of light, so the score can differ from what one picture shows.

What helps: In emerald, DG-M5 Emerald returns 90, the most we measure.

Who a DG-Anteros emerald suits

DG-Anteros is a strong second for a round emerald: more light and less leakage than the T73, on the facet plan a cutter already knows from it. Only the angles change.

For the most light, choose DG-M5 Emerald. For a stone that keeps its light at an angle, the T73 Round Brilliant Emerald.

DG-Anteros Emerald: questions

Is DG-Anteros good for emerald?

Yes, for a round: Brilliance 86 against 78 for the T73 in emerald, second only to DG-M5 (90).

Why does DG-Anteros list so few pros in emerald?

We list every score once, on the side where its gap is widest. Its gains over the T73 in emerald are smaller than its losses against the same cut in diamond, so brilliance and leakage appear as cons.

DG-Anteros or DG-M5 for an emerald?

DG-M5 returns more light (90 against 86) and leaks less (10% against 14%); DG-Anteros has a little more fire (52 against 46) and the familiar 73-facet plan.
