10x magnification is the standard view for diamond clarity grading: ten times life size, with a loupe or a microscope.
In more detail
A clarity grade describes what a skilled grader finds at 10x, not what you see at arm's length. Many inclusions that a grader finds at 10x are not visible to the unaided eye. A 10x loupe is also the first tool to look for doubled facet edges in moissanite.
On a grading report
GIA and IGI both set the clarity grade at 10x.
Related terms
- Clarity grade: The clarity grade says how free a diamond is of inclusions (inside) and blemishes (on the surface) at 10x magnification. GIA's scale has 11 grades in six categories, from Flawless (FL) to Included (I3).
- Clarity plot: The clarity plot is the map on a full grading report: an outline of the stone with symbols on it. Each symbol shows the type, position and approximate size of a clarity characteristic.
- Facet doubling: Facet doubling is the double image of facet edges seen through a strongly doubly refractive stone. It shows clearly in moissanite under a 10× loupe.
- Polish: Polish is the grade for the smoothness of the facet surfaces, from Excellent to Poor. The grader looks at 10x for pits, nicks, polish lines, scratches, burn marks and rough patches.
