The report number is the unique number a lab gives a report. GIA registers it in its database, so anyone can look it up.
In more detail
Many stones carry their report number on the girdle, written by a laser. Compare that number, the online record and the stone's weight and measurements. A matching number alone proves little. GIA has found moissanites with a fake GIA inscription that copied a real report number.
On a grading report
In the identity block near the top of the report. IGI inscribes every laboratory-grown stone with "LG" before its report number.
Related terms
- Inscription: An inscription is text that a laser writes on the girdle of a stone, too small to see without magnification. Most often it is the report number.
- Report Check: Report Check is GIA's online database. Enter a report number to see what GIA itself recorded; IGI's equivalent is Verify Your Report.
- Measurements: Measurements is the report line that gives a stone's size in millimeters. A round reads minimum – maximum diameter × depth, and a fancy shape length × width × depth.
- Diamond grading report: A diamond grading report is an independent lab's record of what a stone is and how it grades. It is true for the day the lab examined the stone.
