# Studio

Pictures and videos from our tools, up to 4K

The 3D Gemstone Simulator, the Brightness & Tilt Analysis, the Hearts & Arrows Scope, the Cut Performance Wheel, the Polariscope, the Dichroscope and the Spectroscope can each save what they show as a picture or a video, sized for a post, a reel or a lesson. Nothing is recorded off the screen: every frame is traced or drawn again at the size you choose, so a video is as sharp as a still.

## What you can make

Open the Studio from its button on the tool. Set the stone, or the cuts, the way you want them first: the Studio starts from the view as it stands, and its preview shows the frame exactly as it will be.

- **A still**, saved as a PNG.
- **A moving picture**, saved as an MP4. The simulator turns the stone a full turn, rocks it from side to side, or tips it toward you and back. The analysis sweeps the tilt from face up to 30° each way while the cursor follows on the chart. The scope turns the stone over from the arrows to the hearts and back, or turns it under the scope. The wheel grows the stone’s outline out of the comparison’s while the comparison gives way to the stone, or turns the stone beside its wheel. The polariscope turns the stone between the polarizers, or tilts it from its optic axis to across it. The dichroscope turns a full turn, or the stone tilts, while the two windows change color. The spectroscope lengthens the path through the stone from 1 to 10 mm, or runs its cursor along the spectrum. Every move ends where it began, so it loops.

## Formats and sizes

**The Studio's formats and their sizes in pixels**

| Format | Made for | HD | 4K |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1:1 | Posts on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn | 1080 × 1080 | 2160 × 2160 |
| 4:5 | The Instagram feed | 1080 × 1350 | 2160 × 2700 |
| 9:16 | Reels, TikTok, Shorts and Stories | 1080 × 1920 | 2160 × 3840 |
| 16:9 | YouTube, slides and course videos | 1920 × 1080 | 3840 × 2160 |

In 9:16 the name and the address keep clear of the apps’ own buttons at the top and bottom of the screen. Videos run at 30 frames a second, for 5, 10 or 15 seconds.

## Quality, and how long it takes

Fast, Fine and Finest set how many times each pixel is traced and averaged. In the simulator that is 2, 8 or 32 times for a video frame and 16, 64 or 256 times for a still; in the analysis the windows are drawn once, or two or three times over each way, and scaled down. More traces give cleaner edges and steadier sparkle.

In the Hearts & Arrows Scope they trace 4, 9 or 16 rays a pixel for a video frame and 16, 36 or 64 for a still. The Cut Performance Wheel traces its stone as the simulator does; for its morph the two stones are traced once, as stills. The Polariscope, the Dichroscope and the Spectroscope are drawn rather than traced: every frame is drawn from the tool’s own drawing at its full size, so there is no quality to choose, and a video is quick to make.

The work happens on your device’s graphics chip, so the time depends on it. The Studio measures your device and says how long a picture or video will take before you start, then counts the frames down. A 4K video has four times the pixels of HD and takes about four times as long. Keep the tab open in front while it works.

## The files

Pictures are PNG. Videos are MP4 with H.264, which every phone, editor and platform plays, at a high bit rate: a sparkling stone is about the hardest picture there is to compress. Making a video needs a browser that can encode video, such as a current Chrome, Edge or Safari. Where it cannot, the Studio says so and still makes pictures.

## Made on your device

Nothing is uploaded. Pictures and videos are made in your browser and saved straight to your device; we never see them.

## Using what you make

Post and share them freely. They show a model, not a real stone. The simulator’s pictures always carry the label “A simulation, not a grading report”, which our [terms](https://digitalgemology.com/terms) ask you to keep, so it stays even with the name and address switched off. Do not present a picture as a grading report, a certificate or a valuation, or as a photograph of a real stone.
