# The Mazarin: the first brilliant

Lesson quiz · five questions, in a new order every time

Five questions on lesson 2 of The history of the brilliant. The questions and the answers to pick from come in a new order every time you start.

Pick an answer, and the question marks itself. For a question that you answer in your own words, think of your answer first. Then show our answer and say whether you had it. Nothing is saved or sent.

1. Question 1: Why does a rose cut show so little fire?
  ### Show the answer
**b**: The same angle in and out means every color bends by the same amount both ways.
2. Question 2: Why are the Mazarin and the next two cuts cushions and not rounds?
  ### Show the answer
**b**: Bruting to a true circle came only in the 1800s (lesson 5).
3. Question 3: How many facets does the Mazarin have above the girdle, not counting the table?
  ### Show the answer
**b**: 16, twice the old single. That's why its name is the double cut.
4. Question 4: The Mazarin has more facets than the old single. Which score goes up, and why?
  ### Show our answer
Scintillation, 44 → 61: the Wheel counts it from the facets, and the Mazarin has 42 instead of 26.
5. Question 5: Name one reason the Mazarin's brilliance doesn't go up too.
  ### Show our answer
Nobody calculated its angles: a steep pavilion, a deep stone and 17% of the light leaks out.
