# Reading a grading report: course quiz

Twelve questions on lessons 1 to 9

Twelve questions across the whole course. The last three combine lessons.

Pick an answer, and the question marks itself. For a question that you answer in your own words, think of your answer first. Then show our answer and say whether you had it. Nothing is saved or sent.

1. Question 1: A friend says their GIA report proves the ring is worth a certain price. What's wrong?
  ### Show the answer
**b**: A report is not an appraisal (lesson 1).
2. Question 2: A round's measurements read 6.40 – 6.46 × 3.98 mm. Which part tells you the stone is slightly out of round?
  ### Show our answer
The two diameters, 6.40 and 6.46 mm: the minimum and maximum differ (lesson 2).
3. Question 3: What does an asterisk after the color grade on a GIA report mean, and where do you look next?
  ### Show our answer
A detected color treatment. Look in Comments, which explains it (lessons 3 and 8).
4. Question 4: Which of these diamonds can get a GIA cut grade?
  ### Show the answer
**b**: GIA grades cut only on standard round brilliants in the D-to-Z range (lesson 3).
5. Question 5: On an IGI report, what does the comment "Ideal Cut Round Brilliant" tell you?
  ### Show our answer
The cut grade is Excellent, and every proportion falls inside IGI's narrower Ideal band (lesson 4).
6. Question 6: A round has Excellent proportions, Excellent polish and Good symmetry. What's the best GIA cut grade it can get?
  ### Show the answer
**b**: Good symmetry caps the cut grade at Very Good (lesson 5).
7. Question 7: A report says "Fluorescence: None". What range does that cover?
  ### Show our answer
Anything from indiscernible to very faint, under long-wave UV (lesson 5).
8. Question 8: Which GIA report lists up to four clarity characteristics in words instead of a plot?
  ### Show the answer
**b**: The Dossier, which also carries a laser-inscribed report number (lesson 6).
9. Question 9: A diamond has been fracture filled. What does GIA issue, and what does IGI do?
  ### Show our answer
GIA issues an Identification Report, not a grading report. IGI issues no full grading report for non-permanent treatments (lesson 8).
10. Question 10: A report for a 1.00 ct round gives 6.48 – 6.50 × 4.00 mm. The stone in your hand is 1.00 ct but measures 6.67 mm across. What can you conclude, and what would you check next?
  ### Show our answer
The report doesn't belong to that stone: a given cut in a given material has one size at one weight. A 3% wider stone at the same weight could be a different material, such as moissanite. Check the inscription and Report Check, and have the stone tested (lessons 2 and 8).
11. Question 11: A Dossier lists "Cut: Excellent", "Polish: Very Good", "Symmetry: Excellent", "Inscription: none". Which line is suspicious, and why?
  ### Show our answer
"Inscription: none": a Dossier always carries its report number laser-inscribed on the girdle (lessons 2, 6 and 9).
12. Question 12: Two listings: a GIA "Triple Excellent" round and an IGI "Excellent-Ideal" round. Do they mean the same thing? And does either one tell you that the stone earned an AGS Ideal light performance grade?
  ### Show our answer
No. Triple Excellent means Excellent cut, polish and symmetry on GIA's scale. Excellent-Ideal is IGI's Excellent with the Ideal comment for a narrower band. Neither is an AGS Ideal light performance grade. That grade is on a separate supplement, which GIA issues only for stones that reach AGS Ideal 0 (lessons 4 and 5).
