# Pavilion angle and pavilion depth

Lesson quiz · five questions, in a new order every time

Five questions on lesson 5 of Anatomy of a diamond. The questions and the answers to pick from come in a new order every time you start.

Pick an answer, and the question marks itself. For a question that you answer in your own words, think of your answer first. Then show our answer and say whether you had it. Nothing is saved or sent.

1. Question 1: What sets the pavilion depth?
  ### Show the answer
**b**: Half the diameter × tan of the pavilion angle.
2. Question 2: Light inside a diamond meets a facet 15° from square-on. What happens?
  ### Show the answer
**b**: It's within the critical angle (24.4° in diamond), so most of it escapes.
3. Question 3: On the light map, what does a flood of blue mean?
  ### Show the answer
**b**: Light from almost straight above, where your head blocks it.
4. Question 4: At 42.4° the tool traces more brilliance than at 40.8°, but grades it Good. Why?
  ### Show our answer
The grade also weighs contrast and pattern; a very steep pavilion loses both and looks flat.
5. Question 5: What did Tolkowsky say a steeper pavilion would gain, and what would it cost?
  ### Show our answer
More reflection, but less fire; he judged the trade not worth it and chose 40°45'.
