# Putting it together: decode a stone

Lesson quiz · five questions, in a new order every time

Five questions on lesson 9 of Anatomy of a diamond. The questions and the answers to pick from come in a new order every time you start.

Pick an answer, and the question marks itself. For a question that you answer in your own words, think of your answer first. Then show our answer and say whether you had it. Nothing is saved or sent.

1. Question 1: A stone's crown height is 15%, girdle 4%, pavilion depth 45%. Roughly what total depth should the report show?
  ### Show the answer
  **b**: 15 + 4 + 45 = 64%.
2. Question 2: Which one of these alone could limit an otherwise Excellent stone to Good?
  ### Show the answer
**b**: A Large culet caps the grade at Good; a 70% star caps it at Very Good, and Very Good polish allows Excellent.
3. Question 3: Stone B has the T73's exact angles. Why isn't it Excellent?
  ### Show our answer
Its 4.5% girdle pushes the total depth to about 63.6%, and its culet is Medium: two edge limits, no angle problem.
4. Question 4: A stone has a 41.8° pavilion and a 63.1% total depth. Which number limits it?
  ### Show our answer
The total depth: 41.8° is the very top of the Excellent pavilion range, and the depth is just past 63.0%.
5. Question 5: Why can a 61% table still be Excellent?
  ### Show our answer
Proportions are graded together: a flatter crown with a slightly steeper pavilion can balance a large table.
