# Measure your own stone

Also called your own file

“Measure your own stone” lets three of our tools measure your own cutting file or 3D model. They use the same code and settings as for our cuts.

## In more detail

The tools are the 3D Gemstone Simulator, the Brightness & Tilt Analysis and the Cut Performance Wheel. The file must describe one closed, convex, faceted stone, with at most 400 facets and up to 32 MB. The tools refuse anything else with a message, rather than measure it wrong.

## How we measure it

Your browser reads the file on your device and never uploads it. The tools read GemCad (.asc, .gem), Gem Cut Studio (.gcs), STL, OBJ, PLY, OFF, glTF, 3MF, STEP and FBX.

- [Convex](https://digitalgemology.com/learn/glossary/convex): A convex stone has no inward corners: a straight line between any two points inside it stays inside. Most cut stones are convex; a heart, with its notch, is not.
- [Watertight](https://digitalgemology.com/learn/glossary/watertight): A watertight model is a closed surface with no holes, so it encloses a solid. In a closed mesh, exactly two triangles share every edge.
- [GemCad .asc](https://digitalgemology.com/learn/glossary/gemcad-asc): GemCad is Robert Strickland's faceting design program for Windows, and .asc is its text design format. An .asc file gives the gear, the refractive index and every facet's angle and index.
- [STEP file](https://digitalgemology.com/learn/glossary/step-file): STEP is a standard CAD format that stores an exact solid, with each facet as a true plane. CAD programs such as FreeCAD, Rhino and Fusion open it to measure a stone and design a setting.
- [Cut Performance Wheel](https://digitalgemology.com/learn/glossary/cut-performance-wheel): The Cut Performance Wheel is a free Digital Gemology tool. It draws eight light-performance scores of one cut, in one gemstone, on a wheel.
