Brilliance 95 · Fire 36 · Scintillation 83 · in our census, where the T73 scores 94 · 37 · 80 in sapphire

A diamond design measured in sapphire: the eight crack facets that split the hearts in diamond leave a sapphire's light, fire and tilt within a point of the T73's, and move our sparkle score only a little, 83 against 80.

## DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows Sapphire

DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows is the T73 with eight narrow crack facets added to the pavilion, 81 facets in all, on the T73's 40.75° pavilion and 61.7% depth. On a 6.5 mm stone each crack facet is about 0.1 mm wide.

The cut was drawn for diamond, where a Hearts and Arrows viewer shows each heart split down its middle by a thin line. In sapphire, as in every coloured stone we simulate, the hearts do not form. What a sapphire gets instead is the T73's performance almost point for point: Brilliance 95 against 94, Fire 36 against 37, Tilt 76 against 75. All four cons set it against the same cut in diamond.

## Should a sapphire be cut as DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows? Pros and cons

### Pros

None by our margins. It tracks the T73 within a point on light, fire and tilt, and scores 83 for sparkle to its 80.

### Cons

- [Under half the fire of the diamond version](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/sapphire/dg-broken-hearts-and-arrows#con-fire) 36 vs 78
- [Holds less of its light at a tilt than in diamond](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/sapphire/dg-broken-hearts-and-arrows#con-tiltStab) 76 vs 92
- [Heavier than the diamond version](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/sapphire/dg-broken-hearts-and-arrows#con-weight) 1.15 vs 1.01 ct
- [More light lost through the pavilion than in diamond](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/sapphire/dg-broken-hearts-and-arrows#con-leak) 5 vs 2

Compared with the T73 Round Brilliant in sapphire and with the DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows in diamond. A difference counts from 3 points (Brilliance, Fire, Tilt, Leakage), 5 (Scintillation, Symmetry), 4% (face-up size per carat) or 5% (weight); Tilt counts as a pro only for a stone within 5 points of the brilliance it is compared with. ## What the crack facets add in sapphire

No score clears our margins. Brilliance, 95, is a point over the round's 94, short of the three we ask for. Our sparkle score counts the facets that reach the surface of the census model, and the crack facets take the design from 73 to 81, which moves it from 80 to 83; a pro needs five points. The score does not weigh facet size either, and these eight are very narrow, so how much a viewer would notice we cannot say. What the cut offers a sapphire is the T73's performance on a facet plan drawn for diamond's hearts.

## What a sapphire gives up against the diamond version

### Under half the fire of the diamond version

**Fire 36** against 78 for the DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows in diamond: 42 points lower

The same model scores 78 in diamond. In the renders the diamond scatters small red, yellow and blue flashes across its face, while the sapphire stays blue, with a few coloured glints near the rim. Corundum disperses light at 0.018, diamond at 0.044, though our census swaps the whole material at once and does not split the gap by cause.

Look at the coloured flashes: those are fire. Same light, same size, same face-up angle; rendered by our 3D Gemstone Simulator from each cut's own model.

**What helps:** Of the rounds we measure in sapphire, [DG-Anteros Sapphire](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/sapphire/dg-anteros) comes closest to the diamond figure, at 43; of the cuts that keep near a round's light, the [Trilliant Cut Sapphire](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/sapphire/trilliant) reaches 52.

### Holds less of its light at a tilt than in diamond

**Tilt 76** against 92 for the DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows in diamond: 16 points lower

In the strip the sapphire's grey covers about a tenth of the face at 10° and over a quarter at 20°, where a broad grey patch opens just below the centre; the diamond's stays under a tenth through 20°. A critical angle of 34.6°, against 24.4° in diamond, lets more light out once a corundum stone tips.

0° · 3% leak

10° · 2% leak

20° · 9% leak

30° · 14% leak

Tilt is how much of its own face-up light a stone keeps when tilted. Each frame is the Light Return map with the stone tilted away from you by the angle shown; grey is light leaving through the pavilion. The share under each frame is that picture's own.

**What helps:** For a steadier stone at a tilt, [DG-Miliano Sapphire](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/sapphire/dg-miliano) scores 83, the best of the sapphire rounds that keep near the T73's light, at 90 brilliance.

### Heavier than the diamond version

**1.15 ct** at 6.5 mm, against 1.01 ct for the same cut in diamond (+14%)

Corundum's specific gravity is 4.00 to diamond's 3.52: 1.15 ct against 1.01 ct for a stone 6.5 mm across.

*Weight of a 6.5 mm DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows: 1.15 ct in sapphire, 1.01 ct in diamond*

A DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows 6.5 mm across, weighed from the model's measured volume and each stone's specific gravity.

**What helps:** Choose it by width rather than carats: the outline is the diamond version's, the stone denser.

### More light lost through the pavilion than in diamond

**Leakage 5** against 2 for the DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows in diamond: 3 points higher

The T73 in sapphire loses the same 5%, so at our resolution the crack facets change nothing here. In the 0° frames neither map shows much grey; the census figure averages a wider cone of light, and the gap opens in the strip as the stone tips.

30° · 14% leak

Each frame is the Light Return map with the stone tilted away from you by the angle shown; grey is light leaving through the pavilion. The share under each frame is that picture's own.

**What helps:** The pavilion already sits at 40.75°, above sapphire's 36.4° guide minimum, so steepening is not the answer. Less leaks from [DG-M5 Sapphire](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/sapphire/dg-m5), 0%.

## Who should cut a sapphire this way

In sapphire this cut performs as the T73 does, within a point on light, fire, tilt and leakage; its eight extra facets read as 83 against 80 on our sparkle score. It suits a buyer who wants one design across a matched diamond and sapphire, or likes the crack facets for their own sake.

Otherwise the [T73 Round Brilliant Sapphire](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/sapphire/t73-round-brilliant) gives a point less light, 94, with eight fewer facets to cut, and [DG-M5 Sapphire](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/sapphire/dg-m5) returns more, 100. For the broken-heart pattern itself, see [DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows Diamond](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/diamond/dg-broken-hearts-and-arrows).

Not by our margins: every score sits within three points of the round's. Brilliance reads 95 against 94, Scintillation 83 against 80, tilt 76 against 75 and fire 36 against 37; leakage is level at 5%.

### What does a 6.5 mm DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows sapphire weigh?
