## DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows Ruby

DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows starts from the T73: a 53.0% table, a 34.5° crown and pavilion mains at 40.75°. Eight crack facets are then polished on the pavilion, one on each ridge where two lower girdle halves meet between the mains, which brings the count to 81.

We drew it for diamond, where our hearts-and-arrows viewer shows each of the eight hearts split down its middle by a thin straight line while the arrows stay crisp. In ruby the hearts do not form, so this page makes no pattern claim.

Against the T73 in ruby no score moves far enough to count. Set beside its diamond twin, the ruby gives up fire and tilt stability and leaks more.

## Is a DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows ruby a good idea? Pros and cons

### Pros

None by our margins: three small gains on the T73, none big enough to count.

### Cons

- [Less than half the fire of a diamond cut the same way](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-broken-hearts-and-arrows#con-fire) 36 vs 78
- [Keeps less light at a tilt than the diamond](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-broken-hearts-and-arrows#con-tiltStab) 76 vs 92
- [More carats than diamond at any given width](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-broken-hearts-and-arrows#con-weight) 1.15 vs 1.01 ct
- [More light lost through the back than in diamond](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-broken-hearts-and-arrows#con-leak) 5 vs 2

Compared with the T73 Round Brilliant in ruby and with the DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows in diamond. A difference counts from 3 points (Brilliance, Fire, Tilt, Leakage), 5 (Scintillation, Symmetry), 4% (face-up size per carat) or 5% (weight); Tilt counts as a pro only for a stone within 5 points of the brilliance it is compared with. ## What ruby gains in DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows

Three scores edge the T73 in ruby, none by our pro margin: Brilliance 95 to 94, Tilt 76 to 75, Scintillation 83 to 80. Our census reads scintillation from the facet plan alone, so eight facets more than the T73's 73 give the same small gain in every stone. Next to the diamond twin it matches scintillation and edges brilliance, 95 to 94. What it offers is the T73's plan with a little more facet work.

## Where DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows costs a ruby

### Less than half the fire of a diamond cut the same way

**Fire 36** against 78 for the DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows in diamond: 42 points lower

Put the identical 81-facet plan in both stones and the census gives the diamond 78, the ruby 36. The two renders show it: the diamond scatters red, yellow and blue flashes across its face, while the ruby shows a few pink patches on a red one. The census swaps the whole material, so it cannot say how much of the gap is dispersion, 0.018 against 0.044.

DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows in diamond · Fire 78

Look at the coloured flashes: those are fire. Same light, same size, same face-up angle; rendered by our 3D Gemstone Simulator from each cut's own model.

**What helps:** No ruby round closes this gap. The most fiery, [DG-Anteros Ruby](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-anteros), reaches 43 and returns more light as well, 97; away from rounds, the [Trilliant Cut Ruby](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/trilliant) scores 52 at 86 brilliance.

### Keeps less light at a tilt than the diamond

**Tilt 76** against 92 for the DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows in diamond: 16 points lower

At a 20° tilt this ruby still returns 76% of the light it shows face-up, against 92% for the diamond cut to the same plan. The strip shows where it goes: almost no grey head-on, about a tenth of the face grey at 10°, and more than a quarter at 20° and 30°, much of it a patch under the table. Ruby's critical angle, 34.6° against diamond's 24.4°, is the likely reason.

Tilt is how much of its own face-up light a stone keeps when tilted. Each frame is the Light Return map with the stone tilted away from you by the angle shown; grey is light leaving through the pavilion. The share under each frame is that picture's own.

**What helps:** [DG-Anteros Ruby](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-anteros) holds 78 when tipped and returns more light, 97; [DG-Miliano Ruby](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-miliano) holds 83, on less light (90).

### More carats than diamond at any given width

**1.15 ct** at 6.5 mm, against 1.01 ct for the same cut in diamond (+14%)

Corundum's specific gravity of 4.00 against diamond's 3.52 puts about 14% more weight into the same outline: 1.15 ct for a 6.5 mm stone here, 1.01 ct in diamond.

*Weight of a 6.5 mm DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows: 1.15 ct in ruby, 1.01 ct in diamond*

A DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows 6.5 mm across, weighed from the model's measured volume and each stone's specific gravity.

**What helps:** Density belongs to the stone, not the cut: order by millimetres and let the carats follow.

### More light lost through the back than in diamond

**Leakage 5** against 2 for the DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows in diamond: 3 points higher

In our census 5% of the light leaves through the pavilion of the ruby and 2% through that of the diamond. The T73 in ruby loses 5%, so the eight added facets neither cure the loss nor add to it; it comes with the material.

**What helps:** Leak share is the same at any size. In ruby, [DG-M5 Ruby](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-m5) lets out 0% and [DG-Anteros Ruby](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-anteros) 3%.

## Who a DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows ruby suits

Choose DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows in ruby for the T73's light with eight extra pavilion facets, for instance to sit beside a diamond of the same cut in one piece. Do not choose it for the pattern: the split hearts are a diamond effect.

For more light in a round ruby, [DG-M5 Ruby](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-m5) returns 100 and [DG-Anteros Ruby](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-anteros) 97; for far finer sparkle at much the same light, [DG-Vitruvio Ruby](https://digitalgemology.com/gemstones/ruby/dg-vitruvio) scores 98. ## DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows Ruby: questions

### Does a DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows ruby show broken hearts?

No. The split hearts appear in diamond; in ruby, as in the other coloured stones, the hearts do not form at all. The scores on this page describe light, not the pattern.

### Is DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows better than the T73 in ruby?

Not by our margins: Brilliance 95 against 94, Fire 36 against 37, Scintillation 83 against 80, leakage 5% against 5%.

### How much fire does a DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows ruby have?

Fire 36 in our census, where the same cut in diamond scores 78.

### What does a 6.5 mm DG-Broken Hearts and Arrows ruby weigh?

About 1.15 ct, the same as a T73 ruby of that width; in diamond, 1.01 ct.
